On October 4, 1962, American Baptist Institution was established as the first university in Northern Nigeria. After the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, who served as the first premier of Northern Nigeria, it was established and given his name.
The institution maintains two locations: the Samaru (main) campus and the Kongo campus near Zaria.
